How to Transport a Hunting eBike in a Truck: Tiedown Math
A hunting eBike that cost more than a used ATV deserves better than one tie-down and hope. Fit and tiedown load limits decide whether it arrives ready to hunt.

Remove the battery if your model allows it, wheel the bike up a ramp you trust, block the leading wheel, then tension 2 tiedowns or more whose combined working load limit reaches half the weight of the bike. Carry 2 bikes often and a trailer replaces lifting with a hitch.
01Does a hunting eBike fit in a truck bed?
Fit comes down to the tailgate: with it down, most fat-tire hunting eBikes ride in a standard bed; closed, few do. A pair of measurements decides it for your bike.
Start from the published carton: the DEFENDER box is listed at 170 × 32.5 × 85 cm (66.9 × 12.8 × 33.5 in) — a realistic floor plan for how to transport a hunting ebike in a truck. Length and bar height force the tailgate down.
What decides fit beyond dimensions
Rail height and a wheel chock matter more than an inch of length. A bike on its own kickstand topples at the first washboard; one whose leading wheel sits in a cradle will not move.
02Should you remove the battery before loading?
Yes, when the pack is detachable. Removing it lets you reduce the weight you handle on the ramp, and it keeps the pack inside the cab rather than in a closed box under direct sun — the condition manufacturer guidance warns about.
A dual-battery design such as the SPECTER-S 3.0 / Hunter X9 (48V/17.5Ah plus an optional second pack) gives 2 packs to place: one on the bike, one in the cab.
Never wedge a hitch ball or tools on the battery housing; a cracked case is not a trailside fix.
03How many tiedowns does a hunting eBike need?
A pair is the minimum on any full-length hunting eBike, and the count is arithmetic, not opinion: federal cargo rules require 1 tiedown for articles of 5 feet (1.52 m) or less and 1,100 lb (500 kg) or less, and 2 once the article is longer than 5 feet.
| Article length and weight | Minimum tiedowns | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 5 ft (1.52 m) or less, 1,100 lb (500 kg) or less | 1 | Only if it cannot move forward to a bulkhead or other blocking device |
| 5 ft (1.52 m) or less, more than 1,100 lb (500 kg) | 2 | Weight, not just length, triggers the second tiedown |
| More than 5 ft and up to 10 ft (3.04 m) | 2 | The bracket every hunting eBike falls into |
| More than 10 ft (3.04 m) | 2 + 1 per extra 10 ft | Add a tiedown for each further 10 ft |
Working load limit is the other half of the rule
Count alone is not enough: the same standard requires the combined working load limit of the tiedowns to reach at least one-half of the weight secured (49 CFR 393.106(d)). That limit is printed on the hardware label, not the breaking strength on the marketing card.
Run the arithmetic in order: find the bike’s weight — weigh it once yourself if the page does not give it — halve it, then add the ratings of your straps until the total clears. Anything you cannot read off a label has to be checked on your own rig before you trust it.
Performance criteria explain why: securement systems under 49 CFR 393.102 are rated at 0.8 g forward, 0.5 g rearward and 0.5 g lateral — forces reached in a hard brake with a bike high on soft suspension.
- 2 tiedowns minimum on a hunting eBike; 4 anchor points is the practical standard.
- Combined working load limit must reach half the weight of the bike.
- Rolling articles need chocks, wedges or a cradle — 49 CFR 393.106(c)(1).
04One strap or four: what keeps a bike still?
Contact points stop movement, not tension. A wheel that can still steer is the failure mode, so lock the leading tire in a chock and tie the frame and fork: two lines forward, two rearward.
Pull the pack before you tension anything: you protect the frame and the battery case at once.
Never hook onto a brake hose, harness, throttle cable, battery housing or the hinge of a folding frame. If the only place a hook fits is a cable, the rig is wrong. That is how you avoid damage you notice only when the brakes fade on a grade.
05Ramp, buddy lift, or ride it up?
Walk it up a ramp when you can, and when the bike is heavier than you can hold on a slope, make it a second-person job.
- Ramp, walked alongside. The default. Low angle, dry surface, one foot on the ramp, both hands on the bike, light throttle only with walk assist.
- Buddy lift. When the ramp is short or the ground soft. One lifts the front, one the rear.
- Riding it up. Only on a shallow, dry ramp. On a wet or steep one, a seated rider has nowhere to put a foot when the tire slips.
Check the ramp rating before you choose a method: it must cover the bike and, if you ride up safely, the rider. Without a legible rating you are taking a risk nobody needs.
06Trailer or cargo space for a hunting eBike?
The trailer wins the moment lifting gets old. The EUNORAU Hunting Trailer 2 Wheels weighs 27.8 lb and carries up to 200 lb on a 26 × 20 × 20 in area, so the bike stays at ground level.
| Option | Lifting | Bike plus gear | Entry cost | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cargo space | Yes — ramp or a buddy | Split: bike in, gear around | Ramp + tiedowns | Occasional trips, 1 bike |
| Hunting Trailer 2 Wheels | No — tires stay down | Both, cargo space free | $329 + adapter | Regular trips, 2 bikes, heavy kit |
| Utility vehicle (S500 / S1000) | No — you drive the vehicle | Dedicated cargo area | $4,199 / $4,899 | Property work and hunting on 1 machine |
07Pre-departure checklist
Re-check after the first miles and at every stop. Lines loosen once suspension settles, and it’s always the check you skipped that shows up on the road.
- Battery out if detachable, carried padded in the cab
- Leading tire locked in a chock, cradle or to the bulkhead
- 2 tiedowns minimum, 4 preferred, opposing directions
- Combined limit at least half the weight of the bike
- Nothing hooked to hoses, wiring or battery case
- Tailgate secured, or rated for the overhang if it stays down
08Frequently asked questions
How do you secure an eBike in a truck bed?
Lock the leading wheel in a chock or to the bulkhead, then use 2 tiedowns minimum, 4 for highway miles, at opposing corners without trusting one point. The combined working load limit must reach half the weight of the bike.
Do you need to remove the battery when transporting an eBike?
Remove it when the pack is detachable, so you’re lifting less weight and keeping the pack cooler than in a closed box under sun. Carry it padded in the cab.
Can I take 2 hunting eBikes in 1 truck?
On most standard beds with the tailgate down, if you block each leading wheel and stagger the bikes so the handlebars do not tangle. Do it often and the hunting trailer keeps both at ground level — handy with a partner who drives a car.
